Fashionable reads are go!
I do like to post fashionable reads and videos on here.
I picked up a copy of Overdressed : The shocking High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elizabeth L. Cline at the library. I have a thing for non fiction books since I started my PhD. I cannot read anything but non fiction now! This called to me.
It explores the dangerous world of cheap fashion and our throw away mindset. What damage Primark does to the economy, the worker, the culture and also, the environment. I have to say, I totally agree.
I cover fast fashion a lot here and I like that fashion has become affordable to those of us on pittance wages. It means that I can shop the latest trends without being bankrupted. However, my mind set has been affected by the idea that all this fabric is throw away. I do not discard things for having a hole in them. I am a fan of the rock n roll hole, missing studs, tear effect so I like my clothes lived in. However, if a button came off something then I have no idea how to fix it. I have never owned a needle and thread.
I think we all think like this. Since I got older, the idea of throwing my clothes away is not really something I do. I stockpile clothing and wear until its battered. I am planning on collecting my unworn T-shirts and taking them apart to sew a blanket out of them. I do donate to charity but the book goes into detail about that not being the answer to our over consumption prayers. We need to learn to sew. I need to learn to sew.
I would suggest getting this book and having a read of it. Learn what your Primark belt and River Island hat are doing to the world around you. See if it changes your mind as it has done with me.
