Released in November 1970, the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs just may be the pinnacle of Eric Clapton’s career. In recording that disc, Eric found himself driven by 3 almost uncontrollable forces. He was madly in love with Patti Boyd, the wife of his best friend, former Beatle George Harrison. Eric took the role of Derek, so he could write Layla, his masterpiece of unrequited love which was about his feelings for Patti. Music alone was not enough to ease the pain of not having Patti by his side, so he turned to heroin to try to escape. In fact, the entire Derek and The Dominos experience was riddled with cocaine, heroin and a dash of Johnny Walker! Fueled by passion and drugs, Clapton was pushed further by the presence of Duane Allman at the recording sessions for the album. Inspired by Duane’s prowess on guitar, Clapton reached deep inside to reclaim the guitar skills that had once led kids in England to scribble “Clapton Is God” on the walls of buildings. The resulting double album is one of the greatest in the history of rock and roll. When the band went on the road in the US in November and December of 1970 in support of the album; however, Duane was not with them -- except for one magic night! On December 1, 1970, 44 years ago today, in Tampa, Duane Allman made his only documented appearance with Derek and The Dominos. This audience recording captures that historic concert, ncluidng their cover of the legendary blues classic, Key To The Highway.
