Big batteries are getting bigger and smarter, and doing things fossil fuels can’t do | RenewEconomy

What we can be sure of is that big batteries will get even bigger. AGL has talked of a 500MW battery at Liddell with as yet unspecified hours of storage, Neoen is talking of a 900MW/1800MWh big battery at the massive Goyder South wind and solar hybrid plant in South Australia, while Sun Cable may trump them all with a 20 gigawatt hour battery in the Northern Territory if its bold plan to supply Singapore with the world’s biggest solar farm becomes a reality.

Batteries have become specialists at providing critical grid services such as frequency control, and are now moving into the large scale provision of “synthetic inertia”. Soon they will be “grid forming”, rather than “grid following”, and offering “system strength”, but these are just a fraction of the so-called “value stack” that is on offer. All of these eat into the domain traditionally dominated by the fossil fuel generators.

The team told the commissioners that on July 23, they plan to seek approval of a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) priced at 1.997¢/kWh for 400 MWac / 530 MWdc of solar electricity delivered at time of generation plus 1.3¢/kWh for the excess electricity later delivered from a co-located 100 MW / 200 MWh (and maybe double’d in the second phase) energy storage system.

Eye on Jordan One of the modern solution to the problem of excess renewable energy during peak production time is known as “power to gas to power”. In simple terms, excess renewable energy can be used to produce hydrogen by electrolysis. Which is stored and later used to either produce electricity (when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing), in industry, to heat homes or exported as car fuel to countries that are investing heavily in hydrogen fuel cell cars, such as Japan.

Renewable energy critics react angrily to the cost of building new transmission infrastructure. Oddly, though, there is never a peep of protest from them when transmission lines are constructed for new coal, gas, or nuclear facilities.

CAISO has proposed 8 strategies for putting excess renewable energy to work, strategies that are endorsed by UCS. These ideas basically center on constructing a smarter, more resilient grid that uses the available supply of electricity more efficiently. Electric cars can play an important part in that process if the charging infrastructure provides for powering chargers with excess electricity whenever possible.

According to UCS analyst Mark Specht, curtailment, if managed properly, is an opportunity not a problem. “[W]e need to be smart about how we approach the ‘problem’ of curtailment,” he says. “Every year, California sets a new record for the amount of renewable energy that’s curtailed. But that doesn’t mean you can use up all that energy by plugging in a battery at any old place on the grid. This means that, when investing in resources such as storage, we need to be smart about where we are making those investments, because putting it in the right place could increase the amount of excess renewable energy that’s available for the storage to soak up.”


Why not harness this excess renewable energy that is producing FREE energy from the sun or wind and use it to create hydrogen, which can then be used to fuel hydrogen vehicles, trains, buses, homes, etc?

Utilities are already pumping water uphill during the night and then generating power at peak load times by running that same water down through a water power generator.

The Sir Adam Beck Generating Complex at Niagara Falls, Canada, includes a large pumped-storage hydroelectricity reservoir. During hours of low electrical demand excess electrical grid power is used to pump water up into the reservoir, which then provides an extra 174 MW of electricity during periods of peak demand.

Low cost, green and clean solar, wind, tide, geothermal and other energy sources can be used to pump water uphill during periods of low demand. During peak demand, that same water can be used for energy.

FOSSIL FUEL AND NUCLEAR ENERGY BASED UTILITIES ARE STARTING ON A DEATH SPIRAL DUE TO ENERGY DISRUPTION FROM SOLAR, WIND, GEOTHERMAL AND OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES


The prospect of cheap solar panels combined with powerful batteries has been a source of significant anxiety in the utility sector. In 2013, the Edison Electric Institute, the trade group for investor-owned electric companies, issued a report warning that disruption was coming. "One can imagine a day when battery storage technology or micro turbines could allow customers to be electric grid independent," the report said, likening the speed of the coming transition to the one from landlines to cellphones 10 years ago. Suddenly regulated monopolies are finding themselves in competition with their own customers.

A solar company is building a huge battery company in Nevada. Their plan is to sell battery energy storage systems with every solar system in the future. Put enough of these together, and the utility company doesn't need to purchase an energy storage system at all. 

So far, utilities have been pushing customers to not put battery storage into solar systems built on residential or commercial roofs. But if the utilities keep pushing back too hard  for the loss of nuclear and oil/coal energy and pay next to nothing for the solar energy generated by those millions of solar roofs, those small micro solar generators may go off grid entirely by adding battery backup systems. As the number of people and businesses doing this increases, it starts adding up to a death spiral for the largest utilities.  

Utilities hate renewable energy and are fighting wind, solar, geothermal and other 100% green energy systems every step of the way, in every way that they can. But by fighting the process of changing the paradigm from a top down, hierarchical pollution producing energy grid to a decentralized, distributed grid, the utilities are forcing customers to disconnect from the grid entirely, or to create independent bottoms up community based utility companies, such as Sonoma Clean Power in California for example.

Then, front groups, like Americans for Prosperity, spread disinformation through their grassroots networks, in postcards mailed to the public, and in television ads attacking the clean energy policy.”

Finally, lobbyists from front groups, utilities, and other fossil fuel companies use their influence from campaign contributions and meetings with decision makers to push for anti-clean energy efforts.”In addition to listing the individual groups that are fighting against clean energy, EPI also provides a chart showing which groups are most active in energy-producing states, and how their attacks on renewable energy have derailed (or inspired) legislation in each state.

Proposals have ranged from charging citizens an extra $50 – $100 a month if they install solar panels, to smear campaigns geared towards convincing the public that installing clean energy technology in their homes is an investment that will never pay off for consumers. The report lists the usual suspects as the main culprits: Heartland Institute, American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Americans for Prosperity, and the State Policy Network. The money behind these groups is from sources like the Koch brothers, Exxon, and many other dirty energy heavy hitters.

And if by some long Hail Mary shot, Trump succeeds in his dead end enterprise of selling out to these toxic duo and giving them all of the power while blocking all renewables, he will end up destroying not just the US, but the entire world. You cannot fix stupid or foolish. President Trump, your path is a dark, toxic and deadly one for the entire planet. The first lesson you need to learn is this one;

"Lazard’s Levelized Cost of Storage Analysis – Version 2.0 has appeared, showing some important changes from version 1.0. While the Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) for several types of storage have declined at the rates consistent with what Seba suggested, three stand out — one of these is reported by Lazard, and the others appeared in recent news.

First, in the version 1.0 report, the LCOS of compressed air storage was reported at $192/MWh. This is a low figure for natural gas peaking plants. In version 2.0, however, the figure had dropped 33% to $116–140/MWh, well below what those peaking plants normally charge. This shows a technology for storage that is getting competitive with nuclear power generation.

Second, examining the 1.0 and 2.0 versions of the report, we can see a decline of 23% in the costs of lithium-ion batteries. Lazard’s analysts may not have known that Tesla would essentially double the storage capacity of its powerwall batteries with an increase in price that really only covered the addition of new inverters. The Gigafactory has come online, even though it is only about 35% finished, and this will drive the price of lithium-ion batteries down further. These changes point to reductions in the costs of storage on the level of 50%.

A third story that could change the market has come from US battery manufacturer Eos. This company has announced a partnership with Siemens on storage solutions. Eos’ batteries are built on a minimum unit size of 1000 MW & 4000 MWh, at prices ranging from $160 to $200 per kWh. Eos’ website gives the LCOE of energy stored in the battery at 12¢/kWh to 17¢/kWh. The LCOE is well below the minimum cost of that of a gas peaking plant, and at a point where it is starting to get competitive with nuclear power.

It is also an indication of how rapidly Tesla is moving to transform itself from a luxury electric carmaker into a multifaceted clean energy company.


Eos Energy Storage and Northern Power Systems Corp. (NPS.TO) today announced a strategic partnership to develop and offer integrated energy storage systems (ESS) for utilities and commercial/industrial customers.The initiative combines the safe, ultra-low cost Eos Aurora DC battery system with Northern Power’s advanced energy storage inverter, controls, and engineering expertise. The suite of integrated solutions provides 4 hours of usable energy using modular 250kW battery building blocks that are scalable for multi-MW applications.

“Batteries represent a significant portion of the performance and cost of an energy storage system,” said Chris McKay, Director of Sales at Northern Power Systems. “By using the Eos Aurora, we can deliver a fully integrated ESS solution at an all-in, installed price of less than $400/kWh—depending on project size and location but always with the quality, functionality and reliability that is characteristic of Northern Power. We believe this offering will allow more customers than ever to access the benefits of an on-site energy storage system.”

Add in other zero carbon energy sources that do not need the sun, such as tides, geothermal and wind, and it gets easier and easier to create a zero carbon, zero nuclear future because the square feet of solar panels keeps dropping, the more other renewable sources are added in.

SUMMARY; HYDROGEN IS THE MOST ABUNDANT, FREE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE IN THE UNIVERSE


Start by producing FREE electricity from wind, solar, geothermal, tides, etc. When you generate more than you need at any time, use that FREE electricity to crack water into hydrogen and water.  Store the hydrogen gas for later. Haven't you just created FREE hydrogen fuel? Now burn that hydrogen that you just created for FREE, and burn it in your hydrogen fuel cell, to produce free electricity when the sun is not shining, or the wind is not blowing.. Simple, right? 

When burning hydrogen gas, the only end result is water vapor. Water turns into hydrogen and oxygen gas. When burned, the hydrogen and oxygen combine back together, forming water. Simple, clean and zero global warming effect, zero pollution hydrogen is the formula for a net zero future that humanity can easily step into, because anything that currently burns fossil fuels can easily be used or converted to burn hydrogen gas, especially anything burning LNG.
