She was the apple of my eye," Paul Chapman, Miwa's father, told Newshub. But at the end of orientation week in 2020, Miwa woke up feeling unwell. She had a headache and quite a high temperature," Paul says. "She reassured us that she wasn't feeling great but she was fine and for us not to worry, so we said goodnight and went to bed."

But early the next morning, Paul's wife received a phone call from Christchurch Hospital. [They] asked if we could come to the hospital immediately. We said we were in Auckland and they said please come as fast as you can," Paul told Newshub. . Click here news-hub

Kiwis smoked and drank more during lockdown, and experts say there's a price to pay
Sophie Harris 05:00, Apr 03 2022..Kiwis have paid a health price for New Zealand’s zero-Covid strategy, with new research showing there was a significant increase in drinking, smoking and gambling during lockdown.

Serious addiction problems have emerged, experts say, and the indirect health effects of lockdown will extend well beyond the toll of Covid itself. A recent report by Te Hiringa Hauora, the Health Promotion Agency (HPA), revealed more frequent and more dangerous levels of drinking, smoking and gambling took place during the August 2021 lockdown.

Health experts are warning the resultant health crisis should be treated as seriously as the pandemic itself. Matt Shand, a writer and researcher at The Helen Clark Foundation, in Tauranga, knew his drinking had become an issue when he found himself with a glass of wine. Click here Stuff news

Tagata Pasifika celebrates 35 years on air
John Pulu APRIL 2, 2022 Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air..A trip down memory lane for Tagata Pasifika’s first host, Foufou Susana Hukui as she watches a video clip of an interview she did with  former Prime Minister of Samoa, Tupua Tamasese Efi.

It was just the most exciting journey that we were going to take,” Hukui says. Because I have watched the white man, white people, other people but never us telling our own stories. When they were told, they were told from a white man’s perspective.”

The weekly show first aired on the 4th of April in 1987, as a pan Pacific voice on New Zealand television. When I got on our first programme, I made sure that we were different. I didn’t deliberately do it that’s just the way I was,” Hukui says. Coloured clothes, summer right through the whole year and flowers in my ear. . Click here Tagata Pasifika

Why Aldous Harding's latest album might just be her best yet
Alex Behan 05:00, Apr 03 2022 Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been fascinated since 2017’s Party, when I watched an online performance of Horizon over and over, utterly mesmerised. I saw several shows on her tour that year and each was a revelation. A tightrope performance so taut I, along with everyone present hung on every word.

But a professional corner of my brain, trained over decades to ferret out perceived commercial potential in a brutal, fickle industry was forming concerns. She was so weird. Had such a bizarre intensity. I worried her highly performative persona, the way she warped her voice from cutie-pie tweety-bird to dark.

In short, I thought the heavy affectation on her voice was a gimmick and one she probably couldn’t keep up, but I had missed the sleight of hand. The voice wasn’t the gimmick – she was. Harding said recently in an interview that she identifies more as an actor. Click here Stuff-news

Barely 18, she’d just had a tough training session with the Wellington Blaze, preparing for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield final. “I actually missed the first call because I was in the shower,” Plimmer laughs.

The White Ferns have never been afraid of showcasing their young talent on the world stage - Melie Kerr making her debut weeks after turning 16, with Fran Jonas the same age when she first played for New Zealand last year.A handful of the current team are still at the top of their game in their mid-30s.  Click here News-room

Green Party calls for further increases in benefits, minimum wage

31/03/2022 William Hewett The Government announced in February the minimum wage will increase from $20 per hour to $21.20 per hour, which will come into effect from Friday. But Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson told AM families need a lot more to be lifted out of poverty.

"Unfortunately households and families will need a lot more before they are living with any sort of dignity. Of course we welcome, as we know households will, any extra dollar - we know that is nothing to scoff at but it's a sad state of affairs when any extra dollar is going to go some way, Davidson said.

Currently most people are only going to get about $15 per week extra for those who are relying on that extra minimum wage to help get by and that is simply not good enough. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern recently accepted New Zealand has a cost of living crisis after previously refusing to do so. . Click here Green

AUT's new Vice-Chancellor: 'The digital divide is a real thing'

02/04/2022..Auckland University of Technology's new Vice-Chancellor is determined to break down inequalities among students in the sector. Professor Damon Salesa started in the role this week, making him the country's first Pasifika Vice-Chancellor.

He told Nine to Noon improving the experience of student groups that haven't previously been well-catered for would be AUT's top priority under his leadership. The reason I want to be a Vice-Chancellor is because I don't think universities have made this the priority it needs to be," he said.

"We will measure ourselves by how our Māori students do, how our working class students do, how our Pacific students do, and how they feel, because actually a positive outcome isn't just a qualification. He said the pandemic illuminated inequities in the sector, with online learning hindering many students' ability to participate. Click here RNZ news

Why are fashion cycles getting shorter?

Laura Hampson 02/04/2022..Fashion has always followed cycles, from Sixties’ mods to a decade bookended by thong-baring low-rise jeans and yoga pants (we’re looking at you, 2000s). Yet, no matter the decade, styles of the past always seem to nudge their way into current movements as we take inspiration from the trendsetters that were.

This seems to be the case at the moment. As Fashion Month has come and gone in a blur of (old) Celine bags and statement coats, there’s been a hint of a trend revival: Tumblr Twee.Tumblr Twee refers to the Alexa Chung-inspired dressing of the early 2010s, think tights under shorts.

The trend was seen on the UK’s style set at London Fashion Week in February, with runway viewers clad in French sailor shirts, jewel-hued quilted jackets and hair kept in place with a neat row of bobby pins — all stalwarts of the pre-Instagram era.  Click here Independent

Impressive new views from curious journeyman Don McGlashan

Alex Behan 12:48, Mar 31 2022.. I was slightly too young to feel the full cultural force of Blam Blam Blam, but my formative musical years did coincide with The Mutton Birds peak in popularity so the impact of Don McGlashan on my fertile mind was distinct and profound.

The way he weaved local landmarks into everyday narratives, or could use domestic appliances as launching points for existential extrapolations was eye-opening for me. I thought songs had to be about grand notions and overwhelming emotions – I didn’t realise you could turn any old thing into art.

An astute storyteller of poignant parables told with enviable lyrical flair, McGlashan points to the universal through the specific. Melodically, he is subversive yet purposeful, often making deliberately “offbeat” choices to mark songs as his own.. Click here Stuff news

Stars of Pacific poetry come out to shine

Kendall Vano APRIL 2, 2022 The Pacific poetry community finally got a chance to celebrate in their shared craft at the Te Atatu Peninsula Library last month..The event was full of cheerful reunions of old friends and new acquaintances after a two year hiatus brought about by the global Pandemic.

It’s very overwhelming. It’s been two years of postponements and cancellations and lockdowns,” says poet and event facilitator Doug Poole. And to see each other again, it’s like we’ve seen each other yesterday; all that playfulness and the teasing and the alofa, it’s still all there.

And I think that’s what I like about Stars of Pacific Poetry. It’s become a movement. An aiga. A family,” he says. Among those present on the night were the Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua, Serie Barford, Daren Kamali and Selina Tusitala Marsh.  Click here Tagata Pasifika
